Monday, 10th December – Franz Josef to Queenstown

Longish drive in prospect, so a relatively early (for us) getaway after, as predicted, a good night’s kip. Knees still feeling it, though……

The early part of the drive was pleasant, without being in any way spectacular, but after we turned into Mount Aspiring National Park after a town called Haast (named after the gent who officially discovered the Franz Josef glacier), the scenery began to change dramatically. The weather was improving, too.

The following pics are from around Lake Wanaka:

And these are from the neighbouring Lake Hawea:

Glorious stuff.

Even though we were on a bit of a mission to get to our hotel in Queenstown, we couldn’t resist stopping for other photo opportunities on the way:

So…… After a nice, pleasant start to the drive, it turned into an absolute belter. Some VERY twisty roads, particularly on the descent into Queenstown.

Checked into the hotel with no trouble and got to our room.

Check this out for a view – and we are here for four whole nights!!!

Fabulous.

The room itself ain’t bad either…..

As a place, Queenstown buzzes. Lots to consider doing, but we are booked onto a coach/cruise combo to Doubtful Sound tomorrow. Pickup time at 7.15 a.m., so an early night is indicated.
